Overview

The most universally popular substrate. It’s a standard 50/50 CVG mix that will deliver clean and consistent results . It’s a completely sterile mix, perfect if you’re eager to minimise contamination, especially if you’re new to growing mushrooms and want to a clean run through to harvest.

Pros

  • Good Water Retention - Coir and vermiculate are both highly proficient at absorbing and therefore retaining moisture - keeping the mix hydrated.
  • Reduced Contamination Risk - Coir and Vermiculite don't contain nutrients like proteins and sugars which contaminants consume.
  • Beginner Friendly - A balanced mix that's ready to use.

Cons

  • Versatility - Less suitable for species with a higher nutrient demand.

Tips

  • Optimise Environment - Keep your microclimate dialled in to encourage gentle surface evaporation. A lightly glistening surface is your goal — not droplets or dry patches. I recommend the lower holes in your tub should be roughly an 1-1.5" above the substrate layer. This will help clear the CO2 without drying out the substrate too much.

Introducing Bulk Substrate

Once your grain is fully colonised (and only then!), it’s time to put your bulk substrate to work. Simply break up the colonised grain and mix it thoroughly through the substrate, making sure it is distributed evenly throughout.

We suggest a ratio of 2:1 (for beginners) or 3:1 — bulk substrate to spawn. Once mixed, leave it to colonise the substrate and let nature do what it does best.

And yes, you could technically use the substrate for something else. Fill a planter. Improve your compost. Make a very elaborate mud pie.

But frankly, it was made for mushrooms. So probs best to give it to the mycelium.

  • For best results use immediately
  • If not using right away — store somewhere cool and dark, ideally 13–21°C, standing upright without heavy items stacked on top.
  • Keep in original sealed bag to maintain sterility while letting it breathe.
  • Do NOT freeze
  • Correctly stored, this item will last upto 3 months. Check periodically for moisture loss.
