Pros

  • Fast Colonisation - A high surface area to volume ratio means more inoculation points for the mycelium.
  • Sufficient Nutrients - Provides a rich nutrient profile that supports vigorous mycelium growth.

Cons

  • Clumping - Breaks down more easily compared to rye or oats, potentially leading to clumping.

Tips

  • Reduce Contamination Risks — Shake the bag gently before use to redistribute moisture and prevent wet pockets, which can promote bacterial contamination. Let the bag fully colonise before handling and only open it in a sterile environment, like a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood.
  • Kickstart Colonisation - If your bag stops colonising and stalls, it’s usually because of positive pressure on the mycelium. Turn the bag on it’s side to change the pressure point and allow your mycelium the room it needs to spread.

Select the right bag size

Something that other suppliers might not tell you is that if you are looking to inoculate your spores or liquid culture then a big bag would be a big mistake. The surface area is larger. Colonisation takes longer. You'll likely lose the batch. Start small for inoculation!

For other purposes such as grain-to-grain transfers or bulk grows - bigger bags make more sense.

Inoculating your Grain

Using sterile practice, inject your mushroom spore syringe through the self-healing port and let the magical mycelium do its thing. Once fully colonised, mix the grain with your bulk substrate

Of course, this all assumes you actually want to grow mushrooms. You could also fill a balloon with grain and make an eco-friendly stress ball, half-fill a container and make homemade maracas, or hell, feed it to the birds.

But whatever you do, for the love of God – do not use your Sterilised White Millet Grain to be growing magic mushrooms!!

Best for Storage

  • For best results use immediately
  • If not using right away — store somewhere cool and dark, ideally 10–21°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Refrigeration (2–8°C) is fine and can help extend freshness; as long as the bag stays sealed and dry
  • Keep in the original sealed bag until you're ready to use — this keeps the item sterile and protected from pests
  • Do NOT freeze
  • Correctly stored, this item will last around 8 weeks
