Product Description

Our Drippy Corn, sterilised popcorn grain spawn, is a reliable, fast-colonising option made from high-quality whole kernel popcorn, fully hydrated and sterilised for ease of use. If your liquid culture has been pre-conditioned with either fructose or glucose, you'll notice a shorter lag phase as the mycelium adjusts, acclimatises, and begins colonisation.

What makes popcorn stand out is its larger kernel size and naturally airy structure. This gives the mycelium more room to breathe, spread, and colonise rapidly. It also breaks up easily when shaken, making it ideal for grain-to-grain transfers and promoting even faster expansion across your substrate.

Corn is naturally rich in starches and amino acids, providing the energy and nutrients mycelium needs to thrive.

Our Expert's Opinion NEW

Tony, our resident mycologist, has this to say.

Pros
  • Beginner Friendly - Larger kernel size makes it easier to shake and break up after colonisation
  • Fast Colonisation - Although larger in size making for less inoculation points, once permeated the mycelium colonises kernals quickly.
  • Less Clumping - When properly dried, popcorn shows less signs of clumping, which is helpful for G2G transfers or LC inoculation.
Cons
  • Slower Colonisation of Bulk Substrate - Popcorn's kernals are bigger in comparison to smaller grains like millet (due to fewer inoculation points per volume) which may affect colonisation time of substrates.
Tips
  • Reduce Contamination Risks - Shake the bag gently before use to redistribute moisture and prevent wet pockets, which can promote bacterial contamination. Let the bag fully colonise before handling and only open it in a sterile environment, like a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood.
  • Kickstart Colonisation - If your bag stops colonising and stalls, it’s usually because of the positive pressure on the mycelium. Turn the bag on it’s side and this will change the pressure point and allow the mycelium a route to grow.

Product FAQs

How do I use this Popcorn Grain?

Inject your mushroom spore syringe into the Popcorn Grain via your self-healing port and let the mycelium do its thing. Once the magical mycelium has colonised the Popcorn Grain and it is all white, then you can mix it in with your substrate.

Of course this is all assuming that you want to grow mushrooms but you could also… fill a balloon with your grain and use it as an eco-friendly stress ball or half-fill a container with your grain and use it as some homemade maracas.. But whatever you do, for the love of God - do not use your popcorn grain to be growing magic mushrooms !!

How long does this Popcorn Grain last?
Popcorn Grain will last approximately 6-12 months in a cool, dark environment. We recommended to store it in a sealed container ensuring that it is suitably protected from pests.

What Will I receive?

  • A bag of Popcorn Grain complete with self-healing injection port and filter (depending on your selected size)
  • 2 x Sterile Sealed Syringe Needles
  • 2 x Sterile Wipes
