What is a mushroom grow kit?
A mushroom grow kit is a pre-prepared growing system that includes everything you need to cultivate mushrooms at home. Most kits come with a substrate (such as sterilised grain or coir), a container or bag, and instructions. All you need to do is add spores or liquid culture.
Are your mushroom grow kits suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Our grow kits are designed to be beginner-friendly, with simple step-by-step instructions. Whether you're growing for the first time or a seasoned cultivator, you'll find our kits easy to use and reliable.
What types of mushrooms can I grow with your kits?
Our grow kits are suitable for fruiting mushrooms that thrive in high-humidity and low-nutrient substrates like Oyster, Lions Mane and Chestnut.
What equipment do I need to use the kit?
It depends on the kit. Be sure to read all the information on the product listing but most of our kits are ready-to-use, you’ll need a clean workspace, i.e. SAB or laminar flow hood, and mushroom spores or liquid culture.
Can I reuse the grow kit after harvesting?
Some kits may produce multiple flushes (harvests), but once the nutrients in the substrate are depleted, the kit will no longer yield mushrooms. You can compost the spent substrate or use it in your garden.
How should I store my kit if I’m not using it right away?
Uninoculated grow kits should be kept in a cool, dark place, such as a refrigerator or cellar, and ideally used within 1–2 months for best results. Avoid freezing or exposing to extreme temperatures especially high heat.
Is it legal to grow mushrooms in the UK?
It is illegal to grow using spores from psilocybin producing mushrooms. The spores we sell are strictly for microscopy. The grow kits are intended for use with legal species only.
What if I see contamination in my kit?
Contamination may appear as strange colours (green, black, pink, etc.) or emitting an unpleasant odour. If you experience contamination, we recommend you immediately dispose of the kit safely so as not to cause contamination to any other grows.
If you suspect the bag to be fully colonised it should smell earthy, if it smells soapy or odorous it’s likely contaminated.
How can I reduce the likelihood of contamination?
We offer guidance on sterile technique and how to reduce the risk of contamination for each step.
