Overview

The McKennaii mushroom is known for its association with the renowned psychonaut Terence McKenna, who extensively explored the world of psychedelics. He wrote multiple books and was a pioneer in the field, devoting much of his life to psychedelic research. Terence and his brother Dennis spent time in the Amazon bringing spores back to the USA. They were reknowned for their experimentation which led them to discovering various cultivation methods of the species. They authored these findings in Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide as published in 1976.

McKennaii mushrooms are a classic Psilocybe Cubensis strain to research under the microscope. Psilocybe Cubensis McKennaii (MCK) is a member of the Strophariaceae family. McKennaii spores are characterised by their distinct elongated shapes and a dark brown colour.

How we prepare spores

We use our years of experience to ensure that whatever format you prefer — you get your spores in tip-top condition.

Syringe. Under a laminar flow hood using strict aseptic technique, spores are carefully scraped from lab grade prints directly into sterile distilled water. We draw them up fresh for every order (no being stored in bulk).

Swab. Certain genetics (like Penis Envy) either release a small amount of spores or none at all so collecting them becomes more difficult for a print — this is where swabs are useful. They are made by wiping a sterile cotton swab across the gills on the underside of a mature mushroom's cap. Don’t worry — this is done in a suitably legal country!

Are McKennaii spores legal?

Yes, it is legal to possess and sell McKennaii spores in the UK, but it is illegal to grow or consume them. Those outside the UK should be familiar with the legal status of magic mushroom spores for their jurisdiction - according to the intended purpose. Microscopy is a rapidly growing activity.

How do I choose a strain to study?

It really depends on what you're looking for. Consider the characteristics you're most interested in, such as shape, size, colour or the history and genetics of a particular strain. Using your spores

  • For best results use immediately.
  • Let the syringe come to room temperature if it's been refrigerated, then gently shake it to re-suspend the spores evenly.
  • Wipe down your workspace with an alcohol wipe to keep things sterile, and note that the needle should be re-sterilised (e.g. with a flame or alcohol wipe) between each slide to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Don't forget to wait 10 seconds for the needle to cool.

Best for Storage

  • If not using right away — store somewhere cool and dark, ideally 4-8°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources - in the fridge is perfect.
  • Keep sealed when not in use.
  • Avoid freezing and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid repeated temperature changes.
  • We recommend to use them within 6 months but it's not uncommon for them to last years.

Why don't we accept card payments? Unfortunately despite progress, the industry is still heavily stigmatised (from banks) which means that even payment gateways such as PayPal don't provide a service for any spore provider based in the UK (also the reason that you cannot buy these spores on the high street).

What happens after I pay? Once we have received payment, a confirmation will be emailed to you. Please allow a few hours for this (within office hours). Meanwhile we'll start preparing your order.

Delivery

We'll prepare and dispatch your McKennaii spores on the same day for orders made before noon (UK time) on working days, i.e. Mon-Fri & non-holidays (UK), except where there are other non-spore items included in the order, e.g. substrate. In which case orders will be dispatched according to the item that takes longest to dispatch (see dispatch times for other item types included in the order).

Otherwise, in the UK you could usually expect to receive your spores within 2-3 days. Outside the UK times can vary greatly - so it is better to order well in advance.
