Overview

The Huautla mushroom, belonging to the Hymenogastraceae family, is renowned for its robust stems and wide, bell-shaped caps. Often adorned with a caramel or chestnut hue, Huautla mushrooms have a striking appearance.

The Huautla was popularised by Maria Sabina who gained international recognition for her knowledge and practice of traditional healing rituals involving psychedelic mushrooms.

She believed that Huautla mushrooms are sacred having spiritual and healing properties, and through her ceremonies, she facilitated connections between individuals and the divine. Sabina's work attracted attention from researchers, writers, and artists, leading to a surge of interest in psychedelic experiences and the exploration of altered states of consciousness.

Her influence and teachings inspired a generation of scholars, intellectuals, and countercultural figures, including the likes of Timothy Leary and Robert Gordon Wasson, who sought to understand and document the cultural and spiritual significance of the Mazatec mushroom rituals.

Maria Sabina's contribution to the understanding and appreciation of Huautla mushrooms, along with her profound insights into the human mind and spirit, have left a lasting impact on the field of psychedelic studies and spiritual exploration. Though relatively scarce, without Sabina's knowledge and wisdom the Huautla strain would likely not be widely known or available at all.

How we prepare spores

We use our years of experience to ensure that whatever format you prefer — you get your spores in tip-top condition.

Syringe. Under a laminar flow hood using strict aseptic technique, spores are carefully scraped from lab grade prints directly into sterile distilled water. We draw them up fresh for every order (no being stored in bulk).

Swab. Certain genetics (like Penis Envy) either release a small amount of spores or none at all so collecting them becomes more difficult for a print — this is where swabs are useful. They are made by wiping a sterile cotton swab across the gills on the underside of a mature mushroom's cap. Don’t worry — this is done in a suitably legal country!

Yes, it is legal to possess and sell Huautla spores in the UK, but it is illegal to grow or consume them. Those outside the UK should be familiar with the legal status of magic mushroom spores for their jurisdiction - according to the intended purpose. Microscopy is a rapidly growing activity.

Using your spores

  • For best results use immediately.
  • Let the syringe come to room temperature if it's been refrigerated, then gently shake it to re-suspend the spores evenly.
  • Wipe down your workspace with an alcohol wipe to keep things sterile, and note that the needle should be re-sterilised (e.g. with a flame or alcohol wipe) between each slide to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Don't forget to wait 10 seconds for the needle to cool.

Best for Storage

  • If not using right away — store somewhere cool and dark, ideally 4-8°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources - in the fridge is perfect.
  • Keep sealed when not in use.
  • Avoid freezing and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid repeated temperature changes.
  • We recommend to use them within 6 months but it's not uncommon for them to last years.

Unfortunately despite progress, the industry is still heavily stigmatised (from banks) which means that even payment gateways such as PayPal don't provide a service for any spore provider based in the UK (also the reason that you cannot buy these spores on the high street).
